What? Wait. You mean I get to write a whole page about me? Holy Glittering Discoballs, I like this writing stuff!
Well, let’s see… I was born into English Aristocracy, eldest daughter and heir to the estate of Lord and Lady Pontsford-Huntington- Smythe, but alas, there was some horrible hospital baby swapping mix up and instead I was brought up without ponies or polo competitions and alack, Prince William never got his chance to meet me. Yes, the history of the monarchy could have been quite different.
Maybe the mix-up was just as well. Otherwise I probably wouldn’t have toured the UK stage as an actress and theatre company administrator and found my way to America. I moved to the US from England in 2004. Going through the mind-boggling visa process was the inspiration to start writing, and the seed that spawned ‘Theatricks’.
I now work as a full time writer and business owner and mother to the most beautiful fur baby, Sergeant Peanut Windybottom. He’s a cocker spaniel. If you know any cockers, you will know why that name is so appropriate. He’s not my only furchild. There is Corporal Milton Hoppit. He’s the chocolate lop-eared bunny. He is, in fact, litter-trained! Impressed, ain’t ya? Oh Lord, am I sounding like one of those smugly proud potty-training mums? Well, I didn’t train him, but it does mean, he can run around the living room and return to his hutch for bathroom breaks—so my rabbit is essentially ‘free-range’. Oh yes, am v. green and ethical. By this I mean, I like animals, I look good in emeralds—feel free to buy me some—and I like people being nice to people. Oh, I also have a donor card. (Regarding this, if my organs are harvested, my eyes are pretty good, but I wouldn’t go for my liver if I were you. FYI.)
I enjoy traveling, eating, drinking (see before note re. liver), theatre and music. I am far cooler now than I was in my teens and twenties and I go to gigs. I know! I love the passion and the poetry of Biffy Clyro, Mumford and Sons and Coldplay. In fact, their songs often loop in my mental soundtrack as I read Theatricks.
Of course I love reading anything I can get my sticky little mitts on! My favourite authors are Anita Shreve—Sea Glass is my favourite, followed by Fortune’s Rocks and Where and When; Arthuro Perez-Reverte—The Queen of the South is just adrenaline a go go! I love Jennifer Weiner, Gemma Burgess, Sophie Kinsella, Joanne Harris, Jodie Picoult, Isabel Allende, Edith Wharton, to name a few.
All time favourite read: The Go-Between, L.P.Hartley. A truly heartbreaking novel, so beautifully layered. This book taught me about the importance of symbolism, of leit motif, of foreshadowing and it was this novel that inspired my interest in astrology. (I’m a Gemini by the way, and it is no surprise that we are the journalists of the zodiac.)
I currently live in the United States, though if Prince William does change his mind…
